How the Pacers ruined a championship contender with tiny moves and one big injury

This is a different kind of Collapse. The Pacers didn't fall from best record in the NBA to the league's basement. They did fall, though, and while their decline wasn't so deep, it was particularly weird.
A lot of people remember Paul George's broken leg, and that played a big part in a great team's demise. The Pacers, though, showed signs of fracturing long before George's injury. (That was an unintentional pun, but we're just gonna leave it.) Seemingly minor moves by team president Larry Bird -- a little trade here, a little signing there -- rattled the team's stars, and perhaps contributed to measurable drops in production.
Bad vibes led to public grouchiness, which led to some surprising departures, which led a team that was already teetering before George's broken leg to capsize for real.
The Pacers' fall from elite to ordinary looks simple from afar, but it includes some strange details you might not remember.

  • Larry Bird was president of basketball operations, but there was another individual at the general manager position as well. Bird took a fairly lengthy leave of absence during the twilight of the "blue collar gold swagger" days. I never knew how much of the shenanigans were Bird's fault (he drafted both some really great and not so great players) or Kevin Pritchard's. Either way, the front office has been a fan's nightmare for years now.

  • Basketball Analytics really started around the 2013-2014 season, as they put certain cameras in the stadium to track players, their movements, shots, etc. Having a lineup where your Small Forward (Lance Stephenson), Power Forward (David West) and Center (Roy Hibbert) can't shoot, that is what killed them. I understand the chemistry argument, but once teams started stretching the floor, and then forcing the pacers to shoot long 2s, that's what killed them. IMO

  • David West should be a GM one day. Looking at his entire career as well as the way he handles himself and his incredibly high basketball IQ, its clear he is easily capable of creating a championship roster that can become a dynasty without the "super team" excuse that has been given to the James-Heat squad and the Durant-Warriors squad (he could create the pre-Durant Warriors that had the entire NBA fanbase's respect because none of the big names were free agent signings).

    Matt DemartisMatt Demartis2 månader sedan
  • How is this video not called "How Larry Bird ruined the Pacers best chance for a championship"? As a GM you know chemistry and locker room influence is crucial to being successful and he gave it all away without talking to the guys who mattered most (many stars other than LeBron James have a voice in these talks). Bird inherited the core and then from the Granger trade to him stepping aside the Pacers fell hard (see graph in video) and the second he stepped away the next person made the right move and made them competitive almost instantly. Not to mention the horrendous handling of the public statements and unnecessary free agent signings that killed confidence (another crucial part of an athete performing that is well documented). Brutal.

  • 4:02 Granger was out of the league within 2 years. If trading him for somebody who might be able to actually play broke their will, then these guys weren't mentally tough enough to win anything anyway. Truth is, the Derrick Rose injury derailed the Bulls and moved the Pacers up in the eastern food chain briefly until Paul George had a freak injury himself.

    • Hibbert was the darnedest thing. Before him, I'd seen guys fall fast because of injury or cocaine or eating their way out of the league, but I'd never seen a player just become obsolete overnight like that. Like the game changed right out from under him.
