Tony Romo’s infamous mistake in Seattle needs a deep rewind

You know what's about to happen. The Dallas Cowboys are in Seattle and looking to take a lead over the Seahawks that could give them their first playoff win in ten years. They've had another year full of dysfunction, but finally look like they will shake out of the funk they've carried for the last decade.
You know the disaster that follows, the career that had its wings clipped before it learned to fly, and the first step of a new journey that never seemed to stay on the path.
But what about what came before that? So much had to fall perfectly so in order to make this moment what it is, and how it remains in our mind. The pain and heartbreak of an entire franchise, the fans forever divided over the quarterback, the lack of playoff success. It masked what led us to this moment. We forgot everything that raised hope so high and made the landing after the fall so much harder. Welcome to a moment in history.

  • Typical Romo.. After this fans still had faith and backed him like crazy even though fumbles, bumbles and of course, Interceptions would kill Cowboys Fans until Dak and Zeke arrived. What I'll always remember about Tony Romo was he always, ALWAYS, bombed in critical and crucial situations to win an important game even if his numbers were a perfect QB passer rating he'd blow it in a game and it hurt to watch especially when December and January came along; "You could even make the argument that Tony Romo is a great quarterback. A top-eight quarterback in the NFL-until the months of December and January." ~Bryn Swartz And December came around and kicked Romo in the balls again, so hard that even though he helped Dallas win 11 of their first 12 games in 2007 we saw the December/January Curse hit him in the nads again when he threw 3 INT's, had 2 Fumbles for loss and only completed 13 of 36 passes in that beatdown by the Eagles. This just continued with Romo and contunues even now. I think Romo isn't the greatest broadcaster but for him the booth is a great place to be. I also think if Jerry Jones would let his actual staff he hired do their jobs and not thinking he's God's Gift to Football and just let the front office work and the coaches work and stay out of their stuff. No suggestions, no nothing. If he just let the teams do their thing and win ball games he's going to have to do that and if he can't Dallas won't be winning an SB anytime soon.

  • Cowboys still had a better than 50/50 chance to win after the infamous play. They had all 3 timeouts left and if they could have held Seattle to a 3-and-out pinned way back they'd have gotten the ball back around midfield with about 45 seconds still to go. Not that they deserved the second chance but it was not game over after the fumbled snap.

  • Nice one Tony Romo. You fudged your team by faking a field goal attempt and then running in the endzone. Then you make the ball squeeze out of your hands so you get no first down at the very least. Great job Romo. Though you were smart huh? *clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap*

  • Dallas was most certainly not just this chip shot field goal away from winning this game like everyone always says. If Dallas had made it, Seattle would have got the ball back with 1:19 and only needing a field goal to win. Josh Brown was money in 2006. He already had made 3 game winning field goals that year including a 54 yarder against the Rams.

  • This was so painful to watch. The NFL put playoff tickets on sale early that season. I had ten tickets in the upper level for the first home playoff game at Texas Stadium in years. I would use 2-4 and sell the rest and make a killing. They lost to the Eagles and Lions to close out the season, did not win the division and had to go on the road to Seattle. No home playoff game and the Romo curse began 😢 You also failed to mention that this game sent Parcells into retirement!!! Wade Phillips took over the the team went 13-3 and won the division the next season. Only to lose to the Giants in the playoffs when Tony Romo and other teammates partied with Jessica Simpson in Cabo during the playoff bye week.

  • Something else that never gets discussed (besides Gramatica's non-block)...... it never should have come down to this particular play to begin with. Jason Witten had just gotten a first down at whatever yard line inside the 5 on a 3rd down, and the Cowboys could've run down the clock for a FG or Seattle would let them score a TD to get the ball back. But then replay buzzes down, it gets reviewed, and even though there wasn't an angle definitively showing where Witten's forward progress was stopped, the refs determine he was short of the first down, it becomes 4th down, and the fumbled snap ensues.

  • Kind of funny to a non cowboy fan watching. If memory serves, Romo's celebrity country and western singer girlfriend was in the owners box that night. And the two continued to communicate after every positive cowboys play on the field, which made the broadcast rough to watch. So that ending made it worth it.

  • This was the year that Romo had gotten the unofficial nickname of “butterfingers” because he was dating Jessica Simpson, or whoever it was. This year was also my crowning achievement as a football fan because I predicted the final scores for every game of the entire season. I only wish that I still had the notebook that I used to write it all down, but when you move every three years, things tend to get lost in the transition.

  • This type of narrative or analysis is the reason why one has to watch the whole game in order to put the game in its proper context. Where to begin? Well, long before Romo's botched snap, Bobby Carpenter dropped an interception at midfield and Terrence Newman dropped an interception in the end zone which allowed the Seahawks to kick a field goal. The final forgotten or ignored aspect of this game occurred immediately after Romo's botched snap. There was over a minute to play in the game, the Cowboys had all 3 timeouts, and the Seahawks were at the 1 yard line. If the Cowboys stop the Seahawks on downs, they probably get the ball at the 50 yard line with a minute left in the game and they would get another shot at a game winning field goal. As they did all game, however, the Cowboy's defense let the team down as Shawn Alexander ran for a first down to end the game.
